Sea Kayaking in Northern Chile
|
The extreme north of Chile is a zone where the aridity of
the Atacama Desert contrasts with the fertility of the valleys
and oasis appearing here and there. Little by little this
desert landscape is yielding to vegetation that survives
thanks to the abundant courses of water. Everything is more
abundant, the vegetation, the rivers, the cities and the
people. In this zone sea kayaking is limited almost completely
to the ocean as the rivers don’t have enough water,
not even near the mouths of the rivers.
To describe northern Chile will inevitably mean talking
about the Atacama Desert, the Highlands, and The Andes Mountains.
Nevertheless, the desert is full of extremes. Some recommended
places to do sea kayaking are Isla Damas, Embalse La Paloma,
Embalse Puclaro, Pichidangui, Guanaqueros, Tongoy, Los Molles,
and almost all the beaches from Los Molles to Arica.

Some recomended places to do sea kayaking are Isla Damas,
Embalse La Paloma, Embalse Puclaro, Pichidangui, Guanaqueros,
Tongoy, Los Molles, and practically all the beaches from
Arica to Los Molles.
Isla Damas is an especially recommended place.
It, along with Choros and Chañaral, is
part of the National Penguin Reserve of Humboldt,
and is located on the border of the third and
fourth regions. Only on Isla Damas is it possible
to put ashore; it has two beautiful beaches and
the crossing from the mainland, with good paddling
time and rhythm takes about two hours. Besides
its penguin and sea lion colonies, the reserve
is known for its bottle nosed dolphins that established
themselves here a little over 20 years ago.
