Sea Kayaking in Northern Patagonia & Pumalin Park
|
The same as in the south, in the Patagonia we find innumerable
lakes, lagoons, rivers, and native forests. The radical difference
is the geography. The Andes Mountains are no longer on the
eastern border of Chile, but are in the middle of its territory,
on the Pacific shoreline. The territory is divided into many
islands and the sea goes in in large and hidden fiords. The
ideal place for sea kayaking explorations.

| Quintupeu Fjord,
Chile. |
The large Island of Chiloé, the last we see of
the Coastal Mountains before they disappear into the Pacific
Ocean, creates a magnificent shield for sailing between
this island and the mainland. The Comau, Qintupeu
and Cahuelmó fiords offer some of the most beautiful
and impressive places in the Chilean Patagonia.
Among the rivers, the Futaleufu is the most famous. The “Meca” for
white water Kayakers, it is also navigable by sea kayakers. From where
the rapids end to the delta in the Yelcho River, the Futaleufu offers an exciting
ride, surrounded by nature and common plants of the area. There are also
the Palena and Yelcho Rivers which are
navigable to the Pacific Ocean.
On the other hand, the Yelcho Lake,
surrounded almost completely by large forested walls, presents,
if the weather permits, an unforgetable excursion. The biggest inconvenience you might find with
this lake is the strong winds that come from the sea and get trapped in the lake,
making paddling very difficult.
