Attractions
El Yeso Reservoir
This is the main potable
water reservoir for Santiago, located more than
98 kilometers to the east of Santiago at an altitude
of 3 thousand meters above sea level. The reservoir
is surrounded by the hills of the Andes Mountains
and its waters are cold and an intense turquoise
color. Besides sea kayaking, windsurfing and fishing
can also be done, and the nearby hills are regularly
visited by mountaineers..
El Plomo Hot Springs
These hot springs are
located a few kilometers to the east of El Yeso
Reservoir. They are made in natural holes in the
ground where you can soak while looking around
at the snow covered mountains.
Cajon del Maipo
An hour away from Santiago
we find Cajon del Maipo, one of the most touristy
parts of the Metropolitan Region. This area is
known for its natural beauty and visitors will
find many tourist attractions and activities along
with quality services. In the Cajon adventure sports,
ecotourism, mountaineering, etc. can be enjoyed.

El Yeso Resrvoir is located in the middle of the Andes Mountains
at an altitude of approximately 3 thousand meters above sea
level.
We arrive here on a gravel road that goes up from the San
Gabriel area towards the mountains. This is a road that continues
along El Yeso River, which the reservoir empties into.
The landscape here is dominated by the snow capped hills.
There is little vegetation, and what there is, is found in
the low laying areas. There are only rocks, and the odd rivulet
running down between the cracks.
We get to the extreme west side of the dam where we’ll
find the dam. From here the road continues along the rugged
edges of one of the hills on the south side of the dam.
On almost the extreme opposite side of the dam, there is
a place where we can put into the water. Here the terrain
is more open and you can see where the valley ends. If you
continue along the road, you will get to the Plomo Hot Springs
and the border with Argentina.
The camp site is on the north side in a hole formed between
the hills. The crossing is short, but with wind the waves
can make it very interesting.
Disembarking can be an adventure because there are no beaches,
and the terrain is very rugged, the water is cold, and the
kayaks must be hauled up to a safe place on land. The campsite
is in a small depression along side of a stream.
The tranquility of the place is overwhelming, especially
when night falls and the clear sky with the absence of artificial
lights allows us to see the stars and the constellations.
Itinerary
Day 1.
The excursion begins with the group leaving Santiago at 8:00 AM
for Cajon del Maipo, southeast of Santiago. We will get to the
dam and the place where we will start paddling at approximately
10:00 AM. After preparing the equipment and loading the kayaks,
we will begin. It will take about 45 minutes to paddle to the
place where we will make camp. After disembarking, we will set
up camp and prepare lunch. In the afternoon, we will take a walk
around the area. The rest of the time is free. In the evening,
we will have dinner, and finally go to bed.
Day 2.
The day will begin with breakfast and packing up. After this,
we’ll put everything in the kayaks again and paddle
around the reservoir until we get to the dam, then we’ll
return to the vehicles.
Disembark, load the equipment and kayaks on the vehicles,
and return to Santiago.
