Jorge Montt Glacier

Jorge Montt Glacier
|
This program is designed for people willing to sacrifice the creature comforts of modern life for hard work and team effort. It requires good physical health, and total comfort being on the water in a wilderness setting, which at any moment can present very harsh weather conditions.
Jorge Montt Glacier is located at the northern end of the Southern Ice Field. To kayak this route is to witness the ultimate grandeur of nature. This is a landscape where signs of human beings are almost totally absent, except for a few scars left by fires made by the early inhabitants.
This expedition requires a great deal of strength, both physically and mentally. For example, we may paddle 5 to 8 hours a day in adverse conditions. We may need to rise at 05:00 A.M. to take advantage of more stable weather conditions. Long, exposed crossings need to be done quickly in order to minimize risk and not be taken by surprise by wind, waves, or changes in the tide.
Paddling the lengths of fjords and canals toward the glaciers in Patagonia offers ongoing views of mountains and endless cliffs. Despite the vertical nature of their walls, they are covered with stubborn, acrobatic trees which cover the heights in a rich blanket of biodiversity, until they reach the snow of the high peaks.
Life surrounds you wherever you look.
Our campsites offer NO extensive beaches of sun and sand. Instead they offer the daily challenge of adapting to the geography and dense plant life of this wild place. At times our campsites are reduced to just a few square meters, enough to protect us from potential storms, and where high tides (20 feet) cannot reach us during the night.
After about 40 nautical miles, or 70 kilometers, of navigation, we arrive, if weather conditions permit, to the fjord at Jorge Montt Glacier. Here the landscape becomes more friendly, as the dense coastal forest gives way to glacial moraines. Left behind by the receding glacier, these extensive rocky areas and more level terrain offer spacious camp sites with superb views of the Southern Ice Field.
