Pirihueico Lake
Located in the pre mountain area of the 14th Region of the Rivers, the Pirihueico is a long lake surrounded by hills almost completely covered in native vegetation. You can cross by ferry to Argentina by the Hua-Hum pass.

Puerto Fuy
This place is situated on the extreme Western side of the Pirihueico Lake and is the location where the Hua-Hum ferry sets off to Puerto Pirihueico, an international pass to Argentina.

Puerto Pirihueico
Puerto Pirihueico is located on the extreme Eastern side of the Pirihueico Lake is an area where the terrain is flat with some small elevations.  In the middle of the Andes Mountains, Puerto Pirihueico is surrounded by hills covered by native forest.

The trip begins in the city of Panguipulli, situated on the western shore of the lake of the same name. From this point we will transfer to the east, towards Puerto Fuy on a road that boarders Panguipulli Lake.

Puerto Fuy is a small town located on the extreme western side of the Pirihueco Lake and is where a ferry boat sets sail twice a day to cross the lake. Here we will begin our sea kayaking adventure.

The Pirihueco Lake is characterized as a long narrow lake, surrounded by abundant native vegetation and, because its streams are rough with steep rocky banks, few beaches are good for camping. A large part of the area on the south side of the lake belongs to the Huilo-Huilo Reserve, a private ecotourism project where a variety of outdoor activities can be done such as hiking, mountain biking, wildlife observation, horseback riding, etc.

Because of the shape and geographic location of this lake, the wind usually blows from west to East; navigation is usually done with a tail wind. There are occasions when the wind does blow from East to West… and it makes the crossing difficult and rough, but very interesting.

The camp site is located about half way around the lake, on a large beach. The tents and the stove are put under the trees and among abundant drift wood the water has brought to shore, protecting the camp site from the wind, the rain and making it part of the surrounding nature.

The second part of the crossing will allow us to see that the lake opens up a little more, with sides that are less steep and more beaches. One of the advantages of navigating on a narrow lake is that paddlers can go from one side to the other to look at the variety of vegetation.

Puerto Pirihueco is a small hamlet. It has a large and beautiful sandy beach and at the extreme northern part we can find the mouth of the Hua Hum River. This river originates in Lacar, Argentina and can be navigated upstream by boat or kayak for some kilometers. It is a cold, deep river with many submerged trees.

But not only can you go up the Hua Hum River, you can also navigate a stream, deep and cold, that goes to a small lake whose shores are full of reeds and are inhabited by ducks, coots, and other common birds in the area.

We will take the ferry back to Puerto Fuy. The return trip to Panguipulli in our vehicle will finish the adventure.
