Ducky Descent (1/2 day)
|
 |
|
The ducky is an inflatable kayak for two people, which allows a person with little experience to descend a river in the company of a guide. |
Attractions
Cajon del Maipo
Cajon del Maipo, located
one hour from Santiago, is one of the most touristy
zones in the Metropolitan Region. At this place,
noted for the beauty of the surrounding nature, the
visitor will find innumerable tourist attractions
and activities as well as quality services. In the
Cajon, you can do adventure sports, ecotourism, mountaineering,
etc.
Maipo River
The Maipo River is one
of the main rivers in the Metropolitan Region that
originates at the Maipo Volcano and empties in
the Pacific Ocean 250 kilometers later. It swells
two times a year, in winter because of the rains
and in summer when the ice and snow melt. This
class III river is ideal for river kayaking and
rafting.
San Jose de Maipo
Located on the banks of
the Maipo River, this small town was founded by
the discovery of silver in the nearby hills. Its
major attractions are its adobe and straw houses,
its church and parish house – declared National
Monuments, and its train station. |
This program includes a descent on class III and IV rapids on a “kayak type” boat but is inflatable in which a participant is accompanied by a guide during their descent down the rapids of the Lower Maipo River.
The descent on the a river in a ducky, a safe and fun way to experience white water kayaking…how it feels, the difficulty, if you like it or not, etc.
This is can be done because the boat being used is easier than a normal river kayak and the beginner is usually accompanied by someone more experienced who guides it, teaches, and ensures that the trip is safe.
It is not only good for those who are interested in learning to do river kayaking, but also for those who are just looking for an adrenaline rush and something more independent than a raft.
Itinerary
The group will meet at the Parque Los Héroes at the entrance to San José de Maipo, from where we will transfer in a company vehicle to El Melocotón area, where we will put into the river.
Here the guide will give all the instructions and basic paddling and safety maneuvers necessary to have a fun and safe descent. These maneuvers will be practiced with the ducky in the water before getting to the first rapids.
During the descent you will practice many of the techniques that are applied to river kayaking, Such as direction maneuvers and strategies for confronting the rapids.
In general the descent on this part of the Maipo takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, approximately. The majority of the rapids (more than 15) are class III, which means that it is an intermediate level descent however, depending on the level of the water, some rapids may become class IV. More fun.
