Maipo River
The Maipo River is one
of the main rivers in the Metropolitan Region that
originates at the Maipo Volcano and empties in
the Pacific Ocean 250 kilometers later. It swells
two times a year, in winter because of the rains
and in summer when the ice and snow melt. This
class III river is ideal for river kayaking and
rafting.
San Jose de Maipo
Located on the banks of
the Maipo River, this small town was founded by
the discovery of silver in the nearby hills. Its
major attractions are its adobe and straw houses,
its church and parish house – declared National
Monuments, and its train station. |
Come
and enjoy an exciting adventure descending some of the most
difficult rapids in the Maipo River (a trip of approximately
25 kms), accompanied by some of the best kayakers in the area.
Itinerary
The adventure begins with
the group meeting at the Parque Los Heroes in
San Jose de Maipo. After this we will transfer
to the Melocoton area where we’ll get in
the river. Here the rafting guide will give instructions
about the paddling and safety techniques necessary
to have a fun and safe descent.
Once the equipment is
ready and the raft is in the water, we’ll start the descent. In the
water we’ll practice the strokes and techniques
explained by the guide before we get to the first
rapids.
In general, the Maipo
is a Class III river, that it is an intermediate
level river because during 2 and a half hours
approximately, we’ll descend
more than 25 rapids of class III, IV, and V.
